Fish On!

Looking through my notes of "missed blogging opportunities" I saw that I had wanted to blog about the first day of fishing season here but never did.  This past Saturday the base held a fishing derby for the kids (families) on base. Now that I'm about 90% over the awful cold I was seriously suffering from last week, I decided to sit down and blog about both!

First things first, the beginning of fishing season was back in April.  Josh was SO excited for it that he got up and went fishing at, like, 6:00am or something ridiculous like that.  By the time the rest of us woke up and started moving around, he returned triumphant.

That's right, he caught TWO decent sized trouts(?). Clearly he was very pleased with himself. As well he should be.

Later that day we took all the boys, and Tante, fishing. I don't know that anything was caught that day except for the one Finn got. Sweet Boy managed to catch a fish with the net we have. The fist was already dead, but he was still pretty excited about getting it himself.

Doesn't he looked thrilled? He actually was excited but when he went to pose for the picture he fell backwards into some sticker bushes (which is why Josh is directly behind him here - to stop him from falling again and to keep him somewhat still so I could snap a picture right quick).

After this Finn got bored and so I took him to play in the sand box (the volley ball court by our house) while everyone else stayed and fished on.

All in all, a pretty good day!

Now, we come to this past Saturday. As I said in my intro, the base held a fishing derby thing for kids and their families. There was also food, and archery and rifles set up for the kids to try out. (Everything was supervised by experienced and qualified adults.) This time my mom and stepdad came up. Josh and Pappy took Zeke and Deacon fishing while my mom and I stayed home with Finn.

After a nice day visiting with my mom and dad, Josh took Pappy back out for some "grown men fishing time." (No one called it that, but that's essentially what it was.)  None of them caught anything that morning, but Pappy sure was the big winner that night!

As you can clearly see by the picture that fish was at least eleventy feet long! And, I heard it took both of them to pull it in, plus three other guys who were out fishing as well.  In fact, the fish was SO big, and it pulled SO hard, the line snapped in the process, and Pappy had to dive in and wrestle the thing ashore! Well done, sir. Fish on!

Second Week of June Recap

June's going to get a week by week recap this year. I'm trying something new. It might just be how I do the whole summer if I like it. I guess we'll see. Except for things that deserve/require/just straight up need their own individual posts. So, without further adieu, the first week of June!

I've already covered the first few days while Josh was gone, and I wrote about Deacon's cafeteria saga, so we'll start with the 7th (it's when I have pictures for) and go through the 14th (excluding the 10th), covering the rest of the first week and all of the second week!

The 7th was the first Saturday of the month, which meant we were at The Home Depot for their kids crafting day thing.

We also went fishing that afternoon. I caught a little something:

and Josh caught a bit bigger something, breaking Finn's fishing pole in the process:

Nice.

Since it was super warm that day, we made our way to Frog Falls after dinner, and NO ONE was more excited about it than this kid:

The 8th saw Deacon going to his first NASCAR race with Daddy, Tante, and Pappy! It was at the Pocono Raceway, and he had a pretty good time.

On the 12th, Finn had a playdate with is girlfriend, Charlotte:

They're so stinkin cute together!

Finally, on the 14th, Josh and I went to the All Saint's Ball. Aren't we a handsome couple?

So, there you have it. Tune in next week for this coming week's recap!

Teach a Boy to Fish...

This year Josh decided it was high time our boys learned to fish. Thus we found ourselves at the sporting goods store buying some poles for the boys while Josh was there to get his fishing license:

The following day was the first day of fishing season so Josh went out by himself as early as he was legally allowed to and caught these guys:

Later that day the 5 of us plus Tante (my sister Kirsten) went out to see what we could catch. Finn was the first one to catch a fish! It was a dead fish that he caught with the net, but it was a fish nonetheless.

He looks a little grumpy because he had fallen off the "dock" into a sticker bush right before I took this picture.

We all had a fun time fishing.

Eventually Finn got bored and I took him back to play in the "big sand box" (sand volley ball court):

A few days later we were out there again:

And again, Finn got bored first and went to play in the sand, this time accompanied by Deacon.

I hope this is the beginning of a life-long hobby, especially since Josh enjoys doing it so much. It'll be a nice thing for him and his boys to have.

And Now There Is One

Awhile back we got some fish.  We started with 5.  After a bit 2 of them died.  We replaced the 2 with 3 new ones, bringing our total up to 6.  One of the new ones didn't take the transition from pet store to home well, and died a few days later, bringing us back down to 5.  Five fish who tended to do this a bunch:

Yep.  They just hung out in that one corner of the tank, sucking down air bubbles.  I have no idea why, but that's where they spent most of their days.  Until 3 more of them died.  Once there were fewer fish in the tank they spent more time swimming around the tank.  They almost gave off the "alone at last" vibe.  I can't help but wonder if they murdered their tankmates just to be alone together.

Anyhoo...besides the fish dying off one by one (or two by two, whatever), the water in the tank kept getting cloudier and cloudier.  So today we went to the pet store to get a new filter, hoping that would help.  Lo and behold, we came back from the store and another fish had died, leaving us with only one.  Oddly enough, this one that's left is one of the original five.  Go Ezekeil.  Live long and keep swimming pal!

Fishy Fun

As some of you may or may not know, we got some fish the other weekend. Five fish to be exact. Happy, Spotted, Ezekiel, Watson, and Davy Jones. Unfortunately the day after we got them, Happy and Spotted died.

This past weekend, we got 3 new fish to replace the 2 dead fish. I guess Josh figured at least one was bound to die again so he erred on the side of extra? Well, all 3 are still alive and seem to be doing pretty well.

Meaning, we now have Spotted 2:

Happy 2 (whose is very tiny and guarded closely by Watson apparently):

And our 6th is Laurence FISHbourne, or Larry as I like to call her (yes, Zeke decided that fish is a girl):

My apologizes for the fuzzy pictures. Apparently new tanks get cloudy and stay cloudy for a few weeks or so. And, is it my imagination, or is Ezekiel growing a mustache?
